Of course, I speak of the staff.

What is the Staff?

If you don’t know what a staff is, a staff is a long stick, ranging between 6’ and 9’. It has been used throughout the world as a combat and self-defense weapon. Arguably it was at one-time the most common weapon in the world.

The staff had its longest history in Asia, where it stayed even when it was clearly less effective than more advanced metal weapons. It held on, because it was one of a few weapons that could be used for self-defense without killing one’s attacker.

Sadly, the staff that is left to the world today is a hollow shell of what it once was. It is mostly just one or two forms and a couple of partner drills.

Returning to the Training of 501 Years Ago

I want you to have more. So, for a single day, I will teach the staff as it existed 501 years in China and Korea.

On Saturday, November 5, I will do so in 4 two hour chunks.

You can select which chunks you want to register for. All chunks can be done by complete beginners.

Section 1: Foundation of the Complete Staff

This section provides you with all the standards that you need to have a complete weapon system. It also contains the spectacular moves that you most commonly see in the movies.

• Learn the essential 8 method—The best strikes of the staff you would be foolish to not know.

• Truly grasp the proper handling methods that will keep your fingers from getting bashed and keep the staff in your hands.

• Get the staff to move comfortably in your hands and around your body with special reflex conditioning drills.

• Twirl, using the twirls so spectacular they are featured all throughout kung fu movies.

• Develop simple, but highly effective blocks using three blocking systems every staff user should know.

• Learn essential partner drills that will allow you to keep building your staff skills long after the seminar is over.

• Put at your disposal the striking box, a simple, highly effective method for learning how to fight many enemies at once.

The object of this section is for you to become skilled enough to be able to do something called twirl to strike transitions or dragon play. Dragon play will allow you to build your staff skills long after the seminar is over, by yourself.

Section 2: Spear Play and the Shaolin Method

There is a saying, "The staff and the spear are the same things, only the staff guy couldn’t afford a spear head!"

The tip is the most powerful part of the weapon, whether or not there is a spear head attached to it. Knowing how to use the tip and how to defend against it is one of the single most important things you can ever learn about the staff.

WARNING: This section is thrilling and highly adrenalized.

You need to be able to control your adrenalin for your own safety and the safety of your partners. If you are not able to do so, do not sign up for this section. It is not for everyone.

Section 2 will cover:

• The two thrust methods at the heart of all spear play.

• The 3 height exchange drill at the heart of all spear play.

• The 3 major tip defenses without which you are at the mercy of any even modestly skilled thruster.

• Cutting with the tip—even a dull wooden tip.

• The spectacular Shaolin 6 strike method and defense, often seen in Shaolin demonstrations!

• The Shaolin short thrust method.

• Dangerous and thrilling spear fencing known as the Snake Seeks will also be taught to willing and competent participants.

Staves will be used about 80% of the time in this section. Spears with metal heads will be used approximately 20% of the time. I will provide the spears for use.

You will be competent at the spear by the end of this section and able to make steady gains by yourself.

Section 3: The Technician’s Paradise

Many of the special maneuvers in this section are not taught until years into staff training. They are learnable by beginners, but will be frustrating to learn in the short time we have.

What you gain out of this time is the ability to do things with the staff that most people have never even considered. As your personal, at home practice advances, you will also be able to add these more advanced maneuvers to it.

The advanced maneuvers we will cover

• 8 primary phase forms—These simple forms dramatically sky rocket your technical skill. You should know them, as should everyone with a serious technical interest.

• 4 Part Strike Training—One of the hidden secrets of developing the experts mind in the staff.

• Staff Takedowns—The staff is also a huge lever. Learn to use that lever to render someone harmless with a takedown.

• Ancient, non-killing police methods. Even in ancient China it was considered poor form for the police to unnecessarily maim or kill someone. Learn the staff methods for subduing and escorting criminals like the sleeve trap and shirt escort.

• Advanced, Rare Striking Methods—These methods have simply been lost. They are devastating and powerful! Included in these methods are:

  • Lightning fast rebound striking.

  • The Whip Strike—almost twice the speed of a normal strike.

  • Water Yoke Striking Method—Essential for fighting multiple attackers.

• Advanced Blocking Methods—These are the methods most commonly used to protect against a highly skilled weapons attacker. Since there are very few highly skilled weapons attackers, these methods have been largely lost.

Section 4: The Power of the Staff in Combat

In this section, you and I will move through fencing with the staff in a simple, step by step method. This is part progressive drills and part on the spot coaching. The majority of the two hours will be spent in rotating matches.

• Gradually scaled drills for honing your staff combat skills, in a safe fashion.

• Freeze Frame Coaching—where a match is frozen and feedback on technique and tactics is given.

• Continuous Coaching—where you a coached as the match goes on.

• Advanced walking methods to let you glide smoothly and efficiently around your opponent.

• Combat simulation drills that will let you unlock the staff’s ability to easily defeat more than one attacker.

Section 4 Special Pre-requisites

1. This section requires the purchase of a Padded Foam staff for use. If you have your own foam staff, I must pre-approve it for you to register for this section.

2. You must take one other section of the seminar to take this section.

3. Realize that 50% of beginners will break their foam staff in the section.

Who Can Take The Saturday Seminar

You must be at least 12 years old to take this seminar, or receive my special permission. The staff is a weapon.   It is not a simulation of a weapon. It can generate thousands of pounds of force easily.

You must be able to maintain reasonable focus for the duration of your section.

You must be able to follow instructions easily.

I have intentionally built this seminar so that no prior experience is required. Beginners are welcome.

You should be comfortable with blisters, as your hands will have blisters.

Sunday Expert Only Section: Becoming a Staff Pro

On Sunday, November 6, I am providing you a special opportunity to deepen your staff skills to the ancient standard of a professional of the long staff.

This advanced section is available to anyone that has completed all 4 Saturday sections on November 5 or in the past. The knowledge must be fresh in your mind.

If you are a prior attendee, but need minor refreshing, you should contact me and schedule a private lesson. If your skills are significantly rusty, you will need to retake the Saturday seminar to refresh your skills.

This is a 4 hour long graduate school like intensive. I I will ram a large quantity of physical skill and tactical knowledge into your brain during this period. It will be thrilling, but unpleasant.

There are 3 Goals:

• Generate ridiculous power.

• Free the brain to work in a 360 degree sphere.

That's it. The standard by which all staff experts have been measured for many centuries.

All Section Pre-Requisite

Without exception, you must have eye protection. I am providing fantastic eye protection for FREE if you register by October 15.

Without exception, you must have a 6’ to 9’ staff. Rattan and bamboo are not permitted. Oars are not permitted.

If you show up with a broom handle, I shall treat you roughly, break your broom stick, and call you a “scabby donkey.”
